Newsletters
A newsletter will be sent home at the beginning of each month with events happening in our classroom and at BK school. Click the monthly link below.
Agendas
Your child will bring an agenda home daily with information on events that will be happening in the classroom each week, as well as their Spelling words. Please check this daily and initial each day. You can send any messages for me in your child's agenda.
Sight Words
These words are frequently used in books and writing that your child will be exposed to. Practice these regularly at home in combination with home reading. Your child should know these words by the end of the year. Click the links below to see the lists of sight words.
Each child reads at his/her instructional level, from leveled books, and receives direct instruction from the teacher. Home reading books are sent home regularly and are selected to match the child’s needs from leveled book collections. Students are expected to bring home books every night. Grade 1 students should be reading 15 minutes every night. Nightly reading can be combined with sight word practice. Leveled books will be kept in a ziplock bag with their sight words. This will begin in October.
Spelling
The grade one spelling program will begin in October. Your child will write the weekly spelling words in his/her planner on Mondays. Please take the time to practice the spelling words at home throughout the week. Spelling tests will take place on Fridays.
Lunch and Snacks
Please send both a snack and a lunch with your child everyday. Students will have 10 minutes before recess to have a snack. Good choices include pieces of fruit, crackers and cheese, yogourt, veggies and dip, and granola bars. Please be aware that BK is a nut-free school.
Library
We will be going to the library on Friday each week. Please remind your child to bring back their books each week in order for them to take out a new one. Please ensure that your child is taking proper care of their library books at home. We will discuss the importance of this in class as well.
Birthdays
We will celebrate birthdays in our class. You are welcomed, but not expected, to send a small treat with your child on their birthday. Remember we are a nut-free school. We will celebrate summer birthdays in June.
